Major firm invests alongside the crowds

Thursday 15th May 2014

Acting as a significant milestone for the fast-growing crowdfunding industry, a major venture capital firm has this month joined together with the crowds to invest in a dynamic new startup.

Faber Ventures, a Lisbon-based venture capital firm is investing £180,000 out of the £250,000 being sought by Maily, a Brussels-based startup that aims to provide a safe, fun and simple e-mail service for young children.

The investment is being handled by Seedrs, the London-based equity crowdfunding platform. Seedrs investors will have the chance to invest the remaining £70,000 of Maily’s round, plus any additional funding Maily chooses to accept. The crowds’ investment will be at the same valuation as Faber’s.

As equity crowdfunding becomes an increasingly sought-after option both for startups and for investors, Maily’s campaign appears to represent several significant firsts, including:

the first time that a major venture capital firm has sourced an investment through a crowdfunding platform;
the first time that a major venture capital firm has made an investment alongside the crowds; and
the first time that the crowds, a top accelerator (Seedcamp) and a major venture capital firm have all backed a startup at its earliest stages

Raphael Halberthal, CEO of Maily, said: “We want to bring Maily to millions of families around the word. To achieve this, we needed to find the right investors after receiving the initial investment and mentoring of Seedcamp last year. We have worked hard to build our product and demonstrate its potential as a commercial opportunity.”

Alexandre Barbosa, Managing Director of Faber Ventures, added: “We see this investment in Maily as the best of all worlds. What is already an excellent company, backed by Seedcamp, will now have the support and validation of the crowds while at the same time benefitting from the hands-on assistance that a venture capital firm like Faber can provide. Seedrs has done a great job of putting this deal together, and we are thrilled to be investing alongside the crowds through a professional and innovative platform like Seedrs.”
