2009 most dramatic equities recovery ever

Thursday 14th January 2010
Doom and gloom abounded in the first quarter with market falls of over 20 per cent, but investor confidence returned and the market raced away, rising over 40 per cent from the low point, according to Hargreaves Lansdown.

Most asset classes, with the exception of commercial property, staged a strong recovery, with 2054 out of 2177 funds producing a positive return in 2009, according to IMA figures.

Going into 2010, the two big questions for the UK are what happens when QE ends and who will win the general election, said Lansdown’s fund supermarket Vantage Development.

Ben Lundie, head of Vantage Development, said: “2009 showed that buying at times of heightened pessimism can be a good thing as those who invested in March were well rewarded. With interest rates at historic lows, many investors had to consider investments (as opposed to cash) in order to generate an income. This led to corporate bond and equity income funds being favoured during the year. Absolute return funds also continued to grow in popularity. Jupiter and Invesco Perpetual were favoured by investors last year as they stayed faithful to the larger brands.
