Mortgage approvals plunge 17 per cent in January

The number of mortgage approvals for UK house buyers fell 17% in January.
Only 48,198 home loans were processed - the lowest level since May 2009 and the second consecutive monthly drop, according to the Bank of England.
Total mortgage advances also fell, with gross lending sliding to £10.24billion, down from £13.53billion in December.
